What is the difference between renting, leasing and monthly car rental in Spain?

Spain has four products and one confusing word. Renting is an operating lease of 24–72 months with insurance, servicing, tyres and road tax included, from €230/month and a median of €575/month. Leasing is finance with a purchase option and a deposit. A subscription is a short-commitment all-inclusive fee. A monthly rental is ordinary car hire stretched past 28 days. Only renting and leasing require Spanish residency.

Where the four products overlap, and what it costs you

They overlap between 12 and 24 months, and that is where people lose money. A committed lease sits at a median of €575/month all in. Monthly rental for a comparable compact runs €500–€900 a month in published market ranges, with no servicing and an insurance excess of €1,200–€2,500. Over one year that is a gap of roughly €1,500 for the same class of car, in favour of the lease — which is the price of the paperwork you avoid by renting monthly.

Quick answers with numbers

Why does "renting" mean something different in Spain?

Because the Spanish market borrowed the English word for a product English does not use it for. In Spain renting is an operating lease: a fixed payment for 24–72 months covering the car, fully comprehensive insurance, maintenance, tyres, roadside assistance and the council road tax, with the car going back at the end. Search "renting" in English and you get flats; the closest terms are "operating lease" or "personal contract hire".

Is a car subscription worth the extra cost?

It is if your plans are uncertain: subscriptions accept non-residents with a passport and a foreign licence and usually allow exit on 30–60 days notice. You pay for that flexibility, above the €575/month median of a committed lease. Under a year in Spain without payslips, it is often the only all-inclusive option open to you.

Which product includes the ITV and the road tax?

Renting and subscriptions include both, because the car is registered to the provider: the ITV inspection (€40–€52) and the council road tax (€80–€180 a year) are their problem. Finance leasing and buying leave both with you.

Can I turn a monthly rental into a lease later?

Not as a contract conversion — different products, different providers. The sequence works in practice though: rent monthly while you get the NIE, open a bank account and build a few months of Spanish income, then apply for a lease. The rental contract neither blocks nor helps that application.

Methodology

Every price on this page comes from the SUIZGORENT index: 4,214 live monthly payments for 391 models from 54 brands published by leasing operators and comparison sites working in Spain. All figures are monthly, for private individuals, with 21 % Spanish VAT included and no upfront payment, unless the source states otherwise; quotes published excluding VAT are converted at 21 %. Cut-off date: 20 September 2026. We do not name the operator behind an individual price. Fleet deals negotiated case by case and local dealer promotions are out of scope. Requirements and tax figures are general information, not legal or tax advice.
