Yes, but four things come before any price: a NIE, a Spanish bank account for the direct debit, a driving licence valid in Spain, and proof of income. Most operators also want a Spanish address and a payment history in Spain, which is why arrivals in their first months are routinely declined. Leases themselves start at €230/month and run to a median of €575/month across 4,214 quotes.
What operators actually ask for (20 September 2026)
| Requirement | Employee in Spain | Self-employed (autónomo) | Non-resident | Document usually asked for | If you do not have it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIE (foreigner tax number) | Required | Required | Required | NIE certificate or TIE card | Nothing moves without it: apply first |
| TIE or residence certificate | Usually | Usually | Not held | Green certificate or TIE card | Monthly rental or a subscription |
| Spanish bank account (IBAN) | Required | Required | Rarely held | IBAN for the SEPA direct debit | Ask the operator whether any SEPA IBAN is accepted |
| Driving licence valid in Spain | Required | Required | Required | EU/EEA licence, or UK licence exchanged | Non-EU licences: carry an International Driving Permit |
| Proof of income | Required | Required | Required | Last 3 payslips · last income tax return · modelo 130 or 303 | A guarantor, or wait until you have Spanish payslips |
| Spanish address or padrón | Usually | Usually | Not held | Padrón certificate or a utility bill | Subscription products do not ask for it |
| Payment history in Spain | Usually | Usually | No | Around 1 year employed, or 2 years of autónomo filings | A foreign credit record carries no weight here |
| Deposit or guarantor | Sometimes | Sometimes | Always in rental | One to three months, or a guarantor | Shorter term or a smaller car lowers the ask |
Operators set their own credit policy and none of them publish it. This table reflects what applicants consistently report being asked for, not a legal requirement. Where we could not verify a rule, we say so in the text.

The gate is income history, not the NIE
The requirement that blocks most newcomers is not the NIE: it is income history in Spain. Applicants consistently report operators asking for around one year of Spanish employment or two years of autónomo filings, and a foreign credit record carries no weight with a Spanish operator. Meanwhile the 4,214 quotes in this index — from €230/month to €4,310/month, median €575/month — are priced for exactly the customer who cannot yet produce that paperwork. For the first 12 to 24 months in Spain it is the paperwork gate, not the price, that keeps foreigners out of leasing.

Quick answers with numbers
Can I lease a car in Spain with just a NIE and no residency?
Rarely. The NIE is a tax identification number, not proof that you live here — non-residents buying property get one too. What an operator underwrites is a Spanish income stream and a Spanish direct debit. Without residency the realistic routes are a monthly rental or a car subscription.
Which driving licences are accepted?
An EU or EEA licence is valid in Spain with no exchange. A UK licence can be exchanged without a driving test under the agreement in force since 16 March 2023, for a fee of about €28.87, and a resident may drive on the UK licence for six months from the date of residency. Paper licences issued before 2000 and licences from the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey may not qualify.
Do I need a Spanish bank account?
In practice yes. Spanish leasing runs on domiciliación bancaria, a SEPA direct debit. Some operators accept any SEPA IBAN and some insist on a Spanish one; it is operator policy, not law, so ask before applying. Opening the account normally requires the NIE first.
What happens if I am rejected?
Nothing that blocks a later application, and reapplying after six to twelve months of Spanish payslips is common. In the meantime the workable options are a monthly rental, which published Spanish market ranges put at €350–€600 a month for a small car, or a subscription. For comparison, the median committed lease here is €575/month with insurance, servicing and road tax inside.
Methodology
Every price on this page comes from the SUIZGORENT index: 4,214 live monthly payments for 391 models from 54 brands published by leasing operators and comparison sites working in Spain. All figures are monthly, for private individuals, with 21 % Spanish VAT included and no upfront payment, unless the source states otherwise; quotes published excluding VAT are converted at 21 %. Cut-off date: 20 September 2026. We do not name the operator behind an individual price. Fleet deals negotiated case by case and local dealer promotions are out of scope. Requirements and tax figures are general information, not legal or tax advice.
