Not a true renting contract: Spanish leasing operators underwrite Spanish income and a Spanish direct debit, and a non-resident has neither. What does work is a monthly rental or a car subscription, both of which accept a passport, a foreign licence and a credit card. Published market ranges put a small car at €350–€600 a month that way, against a committed lease median of €575/month once you can qualify.

The flexibility premium, measured
Nobody publishes the honest comparison, so here it is. Published market rates for a monthly rental run €500–€900 for a compact and €700–€1,400 for an SUV, with servicing excluded and an insurance excess of €1,200–€2,500. The median committed lease in this index of 4,214 quotes is €575/month with servicing, tyres, road tax and fully comprehensive insurance included. Taking the midpoint of the compact rental range, the gap is around €125 a month for the same class of car: that is the price of not having Spanish residency. Under six months it is usually worth paying. Beyond a year it rarely is — over 24 months the difference adds up to about €3,000.

Quick answers with numbers
Can I lease a car with a NIE but no Spanish address?
Almost never. The NIE is only a tax number — non-residents buying property get one too. Operators want a Spanish address, a Spanish IBAN and evidence of income in Spain, and no published operator policy treats the NIE alone as enough. Policies are not public and vary, so it is worth asking, but plan for a no.
What do I need for a monthly rental as a non-resident?
A passport, a driving licence valid in Spain and a credit card in the driver name for the deposit. EU and EEA licences are accepted without exchange; non-EU licences are usually accepted alongside an International Driving Permit. No NIE, no Spanish bank account and no residence card.
I am here for the winter only. What is cheapest?
For a five-month stay a monthly rental or a subscription beats both leasing and buying: leasing needs residency you do not have, and buying needs a NIE, padrón and registration you cannot hold as a non-resident. Watch the licence rule: a UK licence is fine for visits, but once resident you have six months to exchange it.
Does the 90/180-day Schengen rule affect the car?
It affects you, not the vehicle. A rental or subscription contract can run past the day you must leave, and you keep paying for a car you cannot drive. Match the end date to your permitted stay, or take a product with a 30-day notice period.
Methodology
Every price on this page comes from the SUIZGORENT index: 4,214 live monthly payments for 391 models from 54 brands published by leasing operators and comparison sites working in Spain. All figures are monthly, for private individuals, with 21 % Spanish VAT included and no upfront payment, unless the source states otherwise; quotes published excluding VAT are converted at 21 %. Cut-off date: 20 September 2026. We do not name the operator behind an individual price. Fleet deals negotiated case by case and local dealer promotions are out of scope. Requirements and tax figures are general information, not legal or tax advice.
